For over ten years or so game music has developed into a very large market.
Nobuo Uematsu is a prolific Japanese musician known for his composition on popular video games and anime scores, especially for the famous Final Fantasy game series. He started playing the piano at the age of 12 because he wanted to become like Elton John but turns out like a Beethoven of video game music. Uemutsa had spent some time in many amateur bands as the keyboard player and then realized that he loves writing music more than playing. He followed the path of a composer and made demo tapes to several companies and got hired to write some for radio CM. His journey to video game music began when he was invited by a friend to write music for some of their games, then the rest is history.
