Born in Boston, Massachusetts, son of a clergyman, Ralph Waldo Emerson grew up successful as an American transcendentalist poet, lecturer, philosopher and essayist. He wrote one of the best known essays entitled “Self-Reliance”. Aside from being a writer, he also took over the position of a director of his brother’s school for girls in 1823.
